Sales Introduction

In Australia the most important sales are of yearlings, when horses are around 14 to 22 months old. This is the opportunity for racehorse owners and trainers to buy what they hope will become future champions. Australian thoroughbreds are also sold at weanling sales, breeze up sales (2YO’s who are ready to race), mixed, broodmare and dispersal sales throughout the year, or by private sale. There are two auction companies in Australia who organise and run Australia’s major sales. Catalogues provide a preview of lots and conditions of sale and can be obtained by contacting the sales companies direct.

Below are the dates for the major thoroughbred sales in Australia.

Bloodstock Agents/Private Sales

Buying a horse can be a daunting proposition, but professional assistance is readily available through registered bloodstock agents.

Although there are no guarantees of racetrack success, bloodstock agents are equipped to assist with purchasing of horses – both privately or through public auctions – and can provide mating advice, valuations, insurance, shipping information etc.

The Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia Ltd (FBAA) was formed in 1988 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, status and services of bloodstock agents and there are currently 30 accredited members.
