While Winx’s #25 win was top of the pops at Royal Randwick on Saturday, the mighty mare had a terrific support cast with 14 of the 16 stakes races around the nation won by her fellow Australian-breds.
Nine of those black type events highlighted the second day of The Championships, where the best we have to offer were all vying for a massive $10 million in prizemoney.
Importantly, 10 of the 14 nation-wide winners were offered at Australian yearling sales:

- Quilista (G2 Sapphire Stakes, $10,000 @ Perth Magic Millions, $562,900)
- Fundamentalist (Listed Dequetteville Stakes, $135,000 @ Magic Millions National, $87,010)
- Spring Choice (Listed Port Adelaide Guineas, $120,000 at Gold Coast Magic Millions, $163,225)
- Futooh (Listed China Horse Club Mile, $375,000 @ Inglis Australian Easter, $191,950)
- California Turbo (Listed South Pacific Classic, $330,000 @ Inglis Australian Easter, $153,930)
- Improvise (Listed Princess Stakes, $200,000 @ Gold Coast Magic Millions, $124,040)
Statistics clearly show that investors have a much greater chance of securing a Group 1 winner at an Australian sale. 67% of Group 1 winners in Australia last season were sold at a sale compared to Europe (34%) and North America (52%) and growing interest in the local market was evidenced at last week’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Recording the second highest gross ($116,057,500) ever, close to half of those sold were purchased by overseas buyers.
Asian investors accounted for 25.53% of sales, while the Middle East (10%), New Zealand (7.27%) and North America (2.13%) also chimed in with some big buys.
With over 70% of the Australian-bred stakes winners from Saturday being sold at yearling sales, the international interest is hardly surprising.
