Catkins A Crowd Favourite

The Ingham family have been responsible for some giants of the Australian turf including Octagonal and Lonhro, but have they had a more popular horse than Catkins? It would be hard to argue the famous cerise colours are any less liked now than what they were when “The Big O” and “The Black Flash” were in their halcyon days, but the Ingham empire itself is vastly different. Seven years after selling their entire operation to Sheikh Mohammed as he established Darley in Australia, you only need a couple of hands to count the amount of broodmares the family keeps as their own these days. Anywhere up to about 10 mares are maintained at Coolmore Stud for the family, which has around 24 horses in training. “It gives us the foals to come through and we can move them on as we retire them,” said Bob Ingham’s youngest daughter Debbie Kepitis. “We don’t want to get too big.”
