He’s the kind of horse any trainer dreams of … cheapish yearling sale purchase, shows ability early, comes back for second prep and wins a whole lot more.

Six in a row in fact and said galloper is now a leading contender for Group One glory in September.

On Saturday at Caulfield, the Daniel Bowman trained, Begood Toya Mother, had his first major test in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes and aced the exam with a brilliant front-running display over the 1200m.

Massive performance. Memorable too as it is the first stakes winner for the Warrnambool based, Bowman, who has just entered his fifth season of training and will target the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on 21 September with Begood Toya Mother.

Indeed, such was the quality of the Regal Roller display, Begood Toya Mother has been installed a $6.50 pre-post favourite for the Rupert Clarke.

(No Regal Roller winner has gone on to capture the Rupert Clarke, but Voodoo Lad [2016] and Vega Magic [2017] would both subsequently win Group Ones, while last year’s Regal Roller victor, Osborne Bulls, won a Group Two at the Melbourne Cup Carnival).

The 19th stakes winner for Vinery Stud’s former Danetime stallion, Myboycharlie, Begood Toya Mother is one of five winners for the Kaapstad mare, Lady of Helena, in turn a half sister to dual Group One winner Western Red. Lady of Helena was sold for just $600 at the 2013 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale.

Sending Lady of Helena to Myboycharlie that spring, the resultant colt – Begood Toya Mother – was initially offered at the 2015 Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale (passed in for $15,000), before catching the eye of Bowman at the 2016 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale where he was knocked down for $28,000 from the Donnybrook Estates draft.

Eleven starts, seven wins and a second later, Begood Toya Mother has won $277,040 in stakes for his ecstatic bunch of owners: including, yes, Bowman’s mother!

With 30 in work at the ‘bool and a staunch following, Bowman has been fascinated by horses ever since he could walk and talk – “both grandfathers were bookies” – but was selling plumbing supplies up until taking out his trainers’ licence.

In April last year Bowman would notch up a Caulfield double courtesy of Magnapal and Working From Home, but nothing beats your first stakes winner.

“It was only my second year buying at the sales and really liked the look of Begood Toya Mother when I saw him in Adelaide,” Bowman recalls. “Begood Toya Mother was the second cheapest of the five yearlings I purchased that year and I can tell you there are a lot of happy owners.”

Even happier still if he wins a Group One!

“He (Begood Toya Mother) showed ability early and was only beaten a lip on debut (over 1350m at Donald in June 2018) after doing a whole lot wrong,” Bowman points out. “He then won his next start at Echuca and I thought he might be up to midweek city class. He resumed in March with good wins at Warrnambool and Cranbourne, but after he won by 6.5 lengths at Sandown in April, I started thinking that this bloke could go all the way.

“The Regal Roller has been won by some very good horses and fingers crossed he can add a Group One next month.”

But what about the name?

“My brother was always asking me for tips and I used to tell him ‘be good to your mother’, so when it came to naming this horse, my brother suggested that’s just what we should call him,” Bowman adds.

Part-owner, Warwick Burgoyne, was in Adelaide too for the Magic Millions and readily admits lady luck has dealt him a good hand with Begood Toya Mother.

“I’ve owned around 10 horses over the years including (3-time stakes winner and multiple Group placed) Hi Belle, and usually purchase a yearling or two every year with my father, Doug,” Burgoyne reveals. “We’d been underbidders on about three yearlings and thought we’d end up leaving Adelaide empty handed, but Daniel offered me a share in Begood Toya Mother.

“We’ve been big fans of Daniel for quite a while and, at one stage, I reckon he had a strike rate of 27% (winners to runners). He’s done a fantastic job with Begood Toya Mother.

“Dad didn’t go into Begood Toya Mother with us, but it was shortly after the second prep had commenced that I chased up the breeder and privately purchased Lady of Helena’s last foal, a Casino Prince colt who has just turned two.

“Dad’s in that one and so are a lot of Begood Toya Mother’s owners, so that added further excitement to Saturday’s win.”

Victorian based and toiling in the field of civil construction, Burgoyne is hoping to step up his involvement in racing: “I love this industry and would love to work full-time in it … who knows, if Begood Toya Mother wins a few Group Ones, I might end up Daniel’s racing manager,” Burgoyne adds with a laugh.
