Dissident crowned Aus Horse of the Year

Peter Moody’s champion Dissident has been crowned 2014-15 BMW Australian Racehorse of the Year. Now retired to stud duties, Dissident won four Group 1s during the season, more than any other horse in the country, and he has now added the national gong to his Victorian Racehorse of the Year title. It’s the fifth time in six years Moody has trained the Australian Racehorse of the Year after collecting it with Typhoon Tracy (2010) and Black Caviar (2011-13). Voted on by a national group of 56 racing media and handicappers, the award takes into account performances by all horses on Australian tracks, as well as international efforts by Australian-trained gallopers during the 2014-15 racing season. Dissident, who won the Memsie Stakes, Makybe Diva Stakes, C.F. Orr Stakes and All Aged Stakes, received a total of 119 votes, 61 more than three-year-old Brazen Beau (58 votes), with Contributer (31) and Western Australian filly Delicacy (30) in third and fourth respectively. Dissident was also named Inglis Bloodstock Champion Sprinter of the Year, which covers all performances up to and including 1400m. Brazen Beau was second in that category, but connections didn’t go home empty-handed, collecting the Champion Three-Year-Old Colt or Gelding of the Year award. The most dominant winner was the Gai Waterhouse-prepared Golden Slipper winner Vancouver (below), who collected the Champion Two-Year-Old of the Year award from Pride Of Dubai. Vancouver - Group 2 Todman Stakes 7 March Delicacy, who won the Australasian Oaks and South Australian Derby at Group 1 level, was named New Zealand Bloodstock Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of the Year, beating out First Seal and Winx. Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist claimed the Champion Stayer of the Year Award while Godolphin’s Contributer won the Racing.com Champion Middle Distance Racehorse of the Year Award. The Champion Jumper of the Year Award went to none other than the marvel Bashboy, who continues to defy his age and star on the track, collecting the title for the third time in four years. Coolmore’s prolific stallion Fastnet Rock was declared the VOBIS Sires Champion Sire Award, amassing the highest progeny earnings of any stallion in the nation thanks in part to the deeds of his Group 1-winning trio First Seal, Amicus and Magicool. Human heroes were also recognised at the national awards night with Chris Waller presented the Bart Cummings Award for a third successive year as the nation’s most successful Group 1-winning trainer, while Hugh Bowman was named Champion Group 1 jockey for the second time in three years. Sydney-based Waller celebrated a record-breaking 14 Group 1 victories during the 2014-15 season, courtesy of the likes of Brazen Beau, Kermadec, Preferment and Winx, while Bowman piloted a personal-best nine winners at the highest level, with Hallowed Crown his only multiple winner.
