Hussler Gives Weir Another Toorak

The man who wins more races than any other in Australia is developing a special talent for winning one of the country’s best Group 1 miles. Darren Weir has won the past two Toorak Handicaps, securing the latest with Lucky Hussler at Caulfield on Saturday. A barnstorming charge down the outside gives Lucky Hussler his second Group 1 victory Lucky Hussler’s victory came after that of Trust In A Gust last year and also gave him the Group 1 “double-double” of the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes and Toorak Handicap in successive seasons. He won this year’s Sir Rupert Clark with Stratum Star with Trust In A Gust having won it in 2014. “We pinpointed these races with these two horses and they’ve both run well in them,” Weir said. “It’s nice to win both of them.” Lucky Hussler suffered severe interference at the entrance to the home straight but was still too good for Disposition with stablemate Stratum Star a short half-head away third. Lucky Hussler joined Weir’s stable 12 months ago during which time he has been transformed into a dual Group One winner. “He had a few little quirks early on that worked against us, but now he works with you,” Weir said. “It took a while to get him right, but once he got used to us his whole attitude changed.”
