Khan Triumphs For Tassie and Mongolia

The $6 million Melbourne Cup is next on the agenda of Mongolian Khan whose Caulfield Cup win has him shaping as the Australian-bred stayer of the century. The winner of two Derbies and now a Caulfield Cup that was rated one of the best in decades, Mongolian Khan is already high on the list of top local staying products. Bred by Graeme McCulloch at his Grenville Stud in northern Tasmania, Mongolian Khan is owned by the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry Ltd, a company established and headed by Mongolian businessman Lin Lang. He is by far the most important horse among the hundreds Lin owns and which include polo ponies, showjumpers and harness horses, as well as thoroughbreds. As impressive as it was, Mongolian Khan’s half-length Caulfield Cup win failed to earn him Melbourne Cup favouritism, that honour going to Fame Game who finished sixth. While several of those who followed Mongolian Khan home attracted attention, none worked as much as the winner who made his move 700 metres out, hit the front at the top of the straight and held off all-comers. Mongolian Khan is from the Centaine mare Centafit, also dam of Young Centaur (Jeune) who won the Group 1 Wellington Cup (3200m). Centafit’s brother, Centalong – Super Fit (HK), won a Hong Kong Derby, further pointing to his Melbourne Cup prospects. IFrame
