Lumosty and Éclair Choice Register Rare Double

A gelding with a Golden Slipper influence and a mare by Australia’s champion sire Fastnet Rock together established a rare double when they shared the honours in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1000m) at Caulfield. Éclair Choice, a daughter of Bounce who is out of the Golden Slipper winner Burst, looked to have the race won with 20 metres to go, only to be joined on the line by the classy Lumosty. It was the second dead-heat in as many years in the Caulfield Sprint with Miracles Of Life and Bel Esprit splitting the result in 2014. Éclair Choice had won the good quality Adelaide sprint, the Listed Redelva Stakes last autumn having also finished second in the Listed Bendigo Guineas. Ridden perfectly by Dom Torneur, he hit the front at the 50m while Dwayne Dunn on Lumosty was still balancing up after having trouble securing a clear run. The disputed result continued in the stewards’ room where Dunn claimed, unsuccessfully, Eclair Choice had taken his running and cost him outright victory. Lumosty’s performance offers promise of a successful spring to follow a mixed winter. After winning twice down the straight at Flemington she failed twice in Group 1 races in Brisbane before going for a short spell. Trainer Robert Smerdon is looking at the Group 1 Darley Classic at Flemington on November 7 as Lumosty’s spring target. “We hadn’t tightened her down at all and we’re looking at the Darley Classic which is obviously a pretty high aim to have with her,” he said. Smerdon purchased Lumosty for $185,000 from the 2013 Inglis Sydney Easter Sale while Éclair Choice was secured for $5000 from the 2012 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale where she was offered by Newhaven Park. Fastnet Rock (pictured below) has registered another Group 1 winner in Europe with the victory of Fascinating Rock in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. Trained by Dermot Weld, Fascinating Rock had previously won four times at Group 3-level. The win caps a good year in Europe for Australia’s champion sire Fastnet Rock, with Qualify having won the Oaks and Diamondsandrubies having scored for him in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes. They are among 22 Group 1 winners worldwide for Fastnet Rock, a son of Danehill who has shuttled from Coolmore Australia to the operation’s County Tipperary base from 2010 to 2014. Coolmore has confirmed he will return for the coming northern hemisphere season.
