From humble beginnings in Tasmania as an $11,000 yearling, Mystic Journey has become one of the great Australian underdog stories, winning 11 races from 15 starts and earning more than $3.5 million. Now racing tomorrow in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and aiming for the $5 million Cox Plate, trainer Adam Trinder made one of the best decisions of his life when buying the filly from Armidale Stud at the Tasmanian sales for stable owner, Wayne Roser.

It turns out it pays to listen to your fiancée. “We thought she was a lovely, cheap little filly who would go and do a job for us, but we never thought in our wildest dreams that it would end up in a Group One at Flemington!,” Adam Trinder revealed after Mystic Journey won the Australian Guineas. “This was my fiancée, Leah’s pick at the sales … she loved her.”

Racing against heavyweight Hartnell, Mystic Journey has become a heavyweight in her own right to be favourite on the day.

Ahead of the Turnbull Stakes tomorrow at Flemington, look back on Mystic Journey’s path to glory here.
