Introduction

A champion of the world, derby winners in South Africa, Hong Kong and New Zealand, and a Singapore sprinter who has won all there is to win - and all of them Australian.

Since 2003 Australian-bred horses have travelled to Royal Ascot, what their story here.

Horses like Able Friend, Wylie Hall, Luger, Mongolian Khan, Majmu, Alboran Sea and Ertijaal have all carried the letters “AUS” after their name and have all won Group One races internationally.

In some cases, like Wylie Hall and Majmu, they have raced their way to the top of the rankings in South Africa. And for Able Friend it wasn’t enough to be the best horse in Hong Kong - he went to the top of the world ratings.

In Singapore, meanwhile, the Australian three-year-old Super One has emerged as the best to be seen there in years.

During the first half of 2015 alone, Australian-bred exports won 19 locally classified and full international Group One races.

They are just the latest Australian horses to achieve international notoriety.

In the past dozen-or-so years there have been great sprinters who have travelled and won. And along with them the stallions who have shuttled and succeeded.

Choisir started a trend that continues, winning the two biggest sprints at Royal Ascot in 2003. Takeover Target followed him, winning at Royal Ascot as well as in Japan and Singapore and there was Scenic Blast, Miss Andretti, and Black Caviar.

The Victoria Derby and Caulifeld Cup winner Elvstroem won in Dubai on World Cup night, Starspangled Banner won two of England's biggest sprints and stayed there.

It’s nothing new.

Australia has been sending its best horses to the world since the 19th century.

overseas2
Australia has been sending its best horses to the world since the 19th century.

Beginning with the Melbourne Cup winner Carbine who sired an Epsom Derby winner and established dynasties in both the UK and Australia, the Australian thoroughbred has maintained an influence on racing and bloodlines around the world.

Such stars of the Australian turf as Bernborough, Shannon and the Cox Plate winners Tobin Bronze and Noholme all went to the US to either race or stand at stud, or both.

Noholme sired the high-class American racehorse and champion stallion Nodouble who topped the sires list in North America for 1981 and produced almost 100 stakes winners.

Another from the ranks of Cox Plate winners is Strawberry Road, a winner in Germany and the US who also ran fifth in the 1984 Prix de l'Arc De Triomphe and second in the 1985 Breeders' Cup Turf. He went on to sire three winners of Breeders’ Cup races.

But it has been sprinters who have flown the flag highest for Australia over the past decade.

overseas3

More recently the stallions Exceed And Excel, Fastnet Rock and Starspangledbanner have made an impact with their northern hemisphere progeny and there is more to come.

Champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice sereved two breeding seasons the Aga Khan's Haras de Bonneval, while Darley’s shuttlers Sepoy, Helmet and Epaulette also received a warm welcome from European breeders.

The final half of the 2014-15 racing season has been an outstanding period for Australia-bred runners overseas with 19 locally classified and internationally recognised Group 1 races won by runners carrying the AUS suffix.

Offered for sale at the 2011 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the imposing chestnut was knocked down to Hong Kong-based agent George Moore Bloodstock for $550,000, the highest priced recorded in Australia for a colt by his sire.

Initially trained in Australia by Hawkes Racing for owners Dr and Mrs Cornel Li Fook Kwan, where, as a three-year-old Able Friend had two starts, a new chapter of his career commenced in Hong Kong under the care of John Moore.

A winner of the HK-Group 1 Hong Kong Classic at just his fifth start in Hong Kong, Able Friend has competed at Group 1 or Group 2 level in all his starts since. Success by Region

Europe

Ever since Australia’s ground-breaking sprinter Choisir claimed the double of the King’s Stand Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2003, there has occurred a near-annual pilgrimage to the same meeting.

In 2006 Takeover Target took up the challenge, defeating 27 rivals in the Group 1 Kings Stand and was third in the Diamond Jubilee. He returned twice more to run in the same two races and was never worse than fourth.

Then came Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast who both won the King’s Stand and Starspangledbanner who won the Diamond Jubilee and Newmarket’s July Cup, with Black Caviar overcoming injury to keep her winning record intact in the Golden Jubilee in 2012.

The mare Ortensia further enhanced the Australian reputation with victory in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai before winning the Group 2 King George Stakes at GHoodwood and the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

Black Caviar, Ortensia and company, along with so many others in Hong Kong and Singapore, proved that Australia produces the world’s best sprinters.

And the Victoria Derby and Caulfield Cup winner Elvstroem and his half-brother Haradasun showed the Europeans that we can find some decent middle-distance performers as well.

Elvstroem won the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night in Dubai and then campaigned in Europe where he finished in the top four in each of his four starts.

Haradasun, after being purchased by Coolmore, won the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2008.

More recently the Australian stallion Exceed And Excel, Starspangledbanner, Fastnet Rock, Choisir and others have made their impression in a European breeding industry that may be even more difficult to succeed in than the racing game.

Hong Kong

The Australian-bred Able Friend has set a standard for racehorses in Hong Kong that will be difficult to surpass.

In the 2014-15 season Able Friend raced his way to the top of the world rankings, establishing himself as the best miler on the planet. But he is far from the only Australian-bred superstar to have raced in Hong Kong.

Silent Witness and Sacred Kingdom rated among the world’s sprinters of their time and had cult followings in Hong Kong and were successful on a wider international stage. The Australian-bred Luger, a son of Choisir, won this year’s Hong Kong Derby and Thunder Fantasy won among other races, the HKG1 Classic Cup.

Australian-breds have been named Horse of the Year in Hong Kong in seven of the 16 seasons up to 2015.

Nearly half the horses in training In Hong Kong are Australian-bred and almost half the races in the Chinese territory are won by horses imported from Australia.

Singapore

Singapore has been a lucrative market for the locally-trained Australian-breds who excel on the racetrack season-after-season.

Sprinters have generally been the standout performers in Singapore with the likes of dual Singapore Horse of The Year Rocket Man, arguably one of the best sprinters of recent times, going on from Group 1 success in Singapore to performing at Group 1 level in both Dubai and Hong Kong, while fellow class galloper Zac Spirit is also a multiple stakes-performing, Group 1 winner.

Triple Group 1-winning mare Better Life did what most were unable to do in Singapore, capturing the male dominated Singapore Derby, while success in the Kranji Mile and Gold Cup highlighted her as the standout middle distance performer of her year. And Super One, the champion youngster who virtually raced his way out of Singapore and returned to Australia.

South Africa

The success of Australian-bred runners in South Africa grows each year in proportion with the presence of that country’s owners and trainers at Australian yearling sales.

In the past season Australian-breds captured seven Group Ones and 14 percent of South Africa’s stakes races despite making up only three percent of the horse population.

Among the best of them is Majmu, the champion two-year-old filly of her season and a dual Group One winner at three. Alboran Sea also captured two wins at the highest level at three, her victories ensuring of the title of champion three-year-old fillye last season.

The most significant Australia-bred runner in South Africa in recent times is the mighty Igugu, crowned South African Horse of the Year; she was successful on ten occasions, seven of those at stakes level and four times at Group 1.

From a breeding industry perspective, the relationship between both Australia and South Africa has very close ties with not only Australia-bred racehorse being exported, but broodmares and stallions as well.

New Zealand

Horse racing is an area in which Australia and New Zealand have shared resources more than any other.

Australian racehorses have retired to make names for themselves at New Zealand studs. Australian owners and trainers are among the biggest buyers at New Zealand studs the same trade occurs in reverse.

For a couple of hundred years, New Zealand was the only country to which Australian horses could travel freely without quarantine restrictions.

As a result the trade in racehorses, stallions and mares flowed with little inhibition and considerable, healthy rivalry.

There was a time when stoutly-bred New Zealand geldings had a near mortgage on the Melbourne Cup. But as the Australian racing has opened up to the world and due to other commercial factors, Australian-breds are reversing the trend somewhat with success in some of New Zealand’s biggest races.

Prominent among them have been 2014-15 New Zealand Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO Mongolian Khan, Champion 2YO Marky Mark, Champion Sprinters Bounding and Sacred Star along with Group 1 winners Platinum Witness, O’Marilyn, More Than Sacred and Costa Viva.

After South Africa, New Zealand was the second greatest source of both international level Group 1 wins and stakes successes for Australian-breds in the last racing season.
