Record Breaking Victory For Winx

Already a dual Group 1 winner, Street Cry’s outstanding daughter Winx added the time honoured Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate to her record, stunning all at Moonee Valley with a sensational four plus length victory in the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship. An impressive last start winner of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, the Chris Waller-trained mare jumped the race favourite and from the inside barrier, jockey Hugh Bowman just had to sit and steer, not needing to go around another runner at any stage during the race.

Third Group 1 victory for Street Cry’s star mare Winx
The victory not only gave trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman their first Cox Plate win, but the result saw Winx break Might And Power’s race record and had many comparing the performance to the stunning seven length romp of Champion Australasian mare Sunline in 2000. artimg2 Having always felt that the mare had superstar potential, Waller stated “She’s a superior athlete. She’s amazing.” The mare appeared to go from two lengths off the leader, to four lengths ahead in a matter of strides as Bowman pushed the button before the home turn. “I could see she was travelling pretty good and there was a lot of room on the rail. There are not many horses that have her acceleration – thankfully,” commented Waller post-race. The first mare to ever complete the Epsom Handicap – Cox Plate double, and only the second horse since Noholme way back in 1959 to recorded victories in the double during the same season, Winx had proven she could run the trip, delivering a stunning victory at the end of her three-year-old season in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) and will now go down in the history books. Bred by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, just like Champion Two-year-old Vancouver, Winx was sold through the Coolmore螺柱 draft at the 魔术百万周岁销售. Purchased for $230,000 by Magic Bloodstock’s Peter Tighe, the victory of the mare took her earnings soaring past $3.6 million. With plenty of options open to Winx, connections are now looking towards the future, and a possible return trip to the Valley. “The plan now will be to get her ready for the autumn. The George Ryder and the Queen Elizabeth are targets,” Waller said. “Maybe then we look at taking on the world or there’s the Cox Plate again.
