Ringerdingding after his win in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes (Lisa Grimm)

B2B Bloodstock’s Ricky Surace might spend a lot of his time in the ‘dream factory’ but is nonetheless a realist and was more than happy to come away a winner after Saturday’s Group Three Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m at Royal Randwick.
Surace had cheered on as his flashy black colt, Ringerdingding, stormed through the pack to capture the Carbine Club in a thriller: the Sebring colt’s third stakes victory, following on from 2018 spring successes in the Group Two Sandown Guineas and Listed Hilton at Flemington.
However, Surace couldn’t help wondering what might have been if only Ringerdingding had secured a run in the $3 million Group One The Star Doncaster Mile later in the day.
“Ringerdingding got balloted out of the Doncaster where he would have carried 49 kilos,” Surace explains. “The Doncaster winner had 49.5 kilos, ran less than two tenths of a second quicker than my bloke, but Ringerdingding came home in faster time while lugging 59 kilos. That’s racing, I guess!”
Ringerdingding has won five of 17 starts, with a further three placings, for $532,145 in prizemoney and, according to Surace, is likely to head to Brisbane to chase down that elusive Group One in either the Kingsford Smith Cup over 1300m on 25 May, or $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m two weeks later.
“He (Ringerdingding) is a multiple Group winning colt by Sebring from a good family, but we’re in no hurry to retire him to stud,” Surace explains. “The Sebrings tend to get better with age – especially when you look at horses like Criterion and Dissident – and, while it’s still a fair way off, we’d be looking to have a crack at the inaugural $7.5 million Golden Eagle (over 1500m at Rosehill Gardens) in November.”
Surace, who races Ringerdingding in partnership with Viv Oldfield, Sean Duke, Wilf Mula and Segenhoe Stud, purchased his Carbine Club winner from breeder, Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, for $170,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Like the guy from the Remington ad, he liked Ringerdingding so much he then went on and purchased the dam, Maybe I, from Three Bridges in 2017.
Since then, the multiple stakes placed Maybe I has produced a full brother to Ringerdingding last spring, is back in foal to Sebring and, due to Sebring’s recent passing, the mare will head to Written Tycoon this spring.
Surace first got into ownership a little over 10 years ago and struck gold immediately with his first horse being dual Group One winner and now Widden-based sire, Star Witness.
“Apart from my main business being Project and Construction Management, my passion lies with effectively building my broodmare band,” Surace reveals. “I’ve learnt from the best – specifically Rick Jamieson (breeder of Black Caviar) – and own mares which all are either stakes horses themselves or dams of stakes horses. All of the mares and their resultant foals are based at Newhaven Park.
“Aside from the likes of Maybe I, my breeding barn includes the likes of Leone Chiara who foaled down a full brother to Star Witness last spring.
“I was fortunate to get a horse like Star Witness so early in the piece and support him with quite a few mares, but B2B Bloodstock has shares in numerous stallions.
“With what started out as a hobby, it has now developed into a business where we race, breed and sell.
“We sold five at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January and achieved some good results, while I purchased three fillies up there as well.
“This business is growing all the time though and we’ll be foaling down nearly 30 this spring while, next year, we’ll be selling around 15.
“It’s a great industry to be involved with.”
