In 2015 it was the likes of Sepoy, Foxwedge and Helmet who dominated the first season sire results at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, and in 2016 with two clear front runners, the quality of their drafts could see either produce a sale topping result.
With the intriguing contest often surrounding which first-season sire will be in favour, many see it as a two horse ‘race’ between Coolmore Stud’s Pierro and Vinery Stud’s All Too Hard.
Set to renew their rival now as stallions, the pair raced each other four times on the track, with Pierro winning both the Group 1 Golden Slipper and Group 3 Run To The Rose, while All Too Hard was victorious in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (below) and finished second in the Cox Plate, with Pierro in third.
All Too Hard took the first round with 47 yearlings catalogued compared to the 42 yearlings for Pierro, but only time will tell what the market is after and it would be no surprise to see some outstanding results come the opening day of the sale on Wednesday.
In order to gain an understanding of the sheer quality that the multiple Group 1 winners covered during their first season at stud, here is a mouth-watering selection of their yearlings on offer.
Pierro (Lonhro x Miss Right Note, by Daylami)
Lot 38: Pierro x Augusta Proud colt – Bhima Thoroughbreds
This colt is the second foal (right) of Augusta Proud, a dual Group 3 winner who was also successful in both the Gold Coast and Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic of her juvenile season.
Her first foal, a filly by Redoute’s Choice was sold in 2015 for $450,000 to Gai Waterhouse and has had one start for a win.
Lot 54: Pierro x Bella Maddelena filly – Middlebrook Valley Lodge
This brown filly is a half-sister to the Group 2 Reisling Stakes winner Military Rose, also successful in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic of her year. She is from the family of Redoute’s Choice’s dual Group 1 winner Melitio, whose first foal Campbell Junior (Encosta De Lago) is a horse to watch in Japan, having won three of his first four starts in impressive fashion.
Lot 65: Pierro x Bonanova colt – Element Hill
Colt out of the Group 1 Emirates Stakes winner Bonanova who is already the dam of Listed winners Prima Nova and Bonaichi, who is in turn the dam of this season’s Listed Geelong Classic winner Extra Choice from the Lindsay Park stable.
Lot 306: Pierro x Hosiery colt – Bowness Stud
This colt is a half-brother to Godolphin’s Champion 3YO UAE Miler and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner Long John as well as the Listed Breeders’ Plate winner Ribald
Lot 313: Pierro x Hurtle Myrtle colt – Segenhoe Stud
The second foal (right) of the Group 1 Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle, herself the first Group 1 winner for her sire Dane Shadow.
“He has a huge hindquarter on him and walks with purpose. He is out of a Group One winner and ticks the box on pedigree and particularly on conformation,” Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien.
Lot 331: Pierro x Irish Lights colt – Coolmore Stud
The colt is the second living foal of Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights.
Lot 448: Pierro x Monsson Wedding filly – Coolmore Stud
This blue-blooded filly is out of the stakes performed Danehill mare Monsoon Wedding, a sister to Redoute’s Choice and Platinum Scissors, a three-quarter-sister to Al Maher and a half-sister to Manhattan Rain and Echoes Of Heaven.
Monsoon Wedding is the dam of six winners from seven to the races highlighted by stakes performers Precious Lorraine, Lucky Raquie, Climatic and Quench The Thirst.
“She is a beauty and would sit comfortably in the top echelon of any sale in the world in terms of both physique and pedigree,” stated Coolmore’s Sebastian Hutch.
Lot 612: Pierro x Skates colt – Segenhoe Stud (as agent for Fairway Thoroughbreds)
Out of the stakes performed Danehill mare Skates, a three-parts sister to stakes winners and successful sires Murtajill and Bradbury’s Luck, this colt (right) is a half-brother to Champion 2YO and Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, Group 1 Robert Sangster winner Juste Momente and the Listed winner Captain Coltish.
Described by Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien as, “A bull of a horse with a short back, terrific substance and quality. He has a particularly good action and I would be very surprised if he wasn’t in the top five per cent.”
All Too Hard (Casino Prince x Helsinge, by Desert Sun)
Lot 136: All Too Hard x Custard colt – Segenhoe Stud
Colt (right) out of the Listed-winning Lonhro mare Custard, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Russian Caravan and to the dam of Group 2 winner Fravashi and Group 3 winner Pure Joy.
From the family of Group 1 winner Costa Viva, this colt is a half-brother to Peter and Paul Snowden’s Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes winner Serene Majesty.
Peter O’Brien of Segenhoe Stud stated, “He is a big, strong colt who has plenty of size, scope and strength. For a big horse, he is extremely light on his feet and a particularly good horse on the lunge. He is very much a colt that has strength and balance to run at two but also the scope to train on you would assume.”
Lot 156: All Too Hard x Devil Moon colt – Vinery Stud
Bay colt (right) out of the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes winner Devil Moon, a half-sister to Classy Choice, the dam of Listed winner Turner Bayou, from the family of Sky Beau who contested four consecutive Melbourne Cup’s.
“He has a lot of quality and his parents were both very good race horses,” stated Vinery Stud’s Adam White.
“He’s probably not an early type. He is just a magnificent horse and you can see him going forward into the future as a type.”
Lot 182: All Too Hard x Element Of Danger filly – Vinery Stud
From the home of All Too Hard, this filly is out of the winning sister to Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy from the family of Group 1 winners Master of Design, Suntagonal and Danasinga.
Lot 208: All Too Hard x Factor Of Safety filly – Woodside Park Stud

Lot 495: All Too Hard x Patou filly – Baramul Stud
A half-sister to the Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, the pedigree page of this filly is only one dam.
The filly is from the extended family of Group 1 winners Elvstroem, Haradasun, Circles Of Gold, Amicus, Starspangledbanner, Markus Maximus and recent Group 1 Hong Vase winner Highland Reel.

Lot 745: All Too Hard x Zouzou colt – Coolmore Stud
This colt (right) is a half-brother to Group 1 Golden Rose and Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Zoustar, out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Zouzou.
While Pierro and All Too Hard appear the logical two from the first season sires list to lead the way, it’s a fantastic crop that includes Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom, Frankel’s three-quarter brother Bullet Train, Dalakhani, already the sire of eight international Group 1 winners and Encosta de Lago’s dual Group 1-winning sprinter Delago Deluxe as well as Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 BTC Cup winner Your Song and Sepoy’s Group 2-winning half-brother Mulazeem.
