Space At Newgate For New Invader

Invader becomes the first juvenile colt to win a Group One this season (Sharon Lee Chapman).

Following a midweek victory at Randwick in February, Newgate Farm’s Henry Field began thinking the flashy colt, Invader, was a genuine Golden Slipper contender.

He didn’t change his mind next time out either when Invader ran a lip second behind the highly rated Gunnison in the Group Two Todman Stakes after copping a decent knock in the run home.

Still, he had secured a run in the Slipper and maybe luck would be on his side this time.

Unfortunately, Invader suffered a stone bruise on race eve and any Slipper dreams went by the wayside.

The racing industry isn’t exactly renowned for second and third chances where valuable colts are concerned, but persistence paid off on Saturday when Invader proved his worth – and then some! – with a withering burst to haul in rivals and capture the Group One Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

“Who knows, maybe the stone bruise was a blessing in disguise,” Field points out. “He certainly went into the Sires’ full of running and I was very confident of his chances over the 1400m, especially after he had such a good gallop through the week.

“Peter (Snowden) declared him on Saturday morning … he’s a genius trainer.

“Invader has become the only colt to win a juvenile Group One this season and hopefully he can double it up by winning the Champagne Stakes in a fortnight (15 April).”

Racing in the fast-becoming-famous China Horse Club colours, Invader was purchased for $475,000 from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2016 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is a son of Snitzel from the Encosta de Lago mare, Flame of Sydney.

It was a remarkable result for Snitzel as the first three across the line in the Sires’ – Invader, Summer Passage and Trapeze Artist – are all by the Arrowfield based stallion, while the winner’s dam has also produced Not Listenin’tome, a Group winner in both Melbourne and Hong Kong.

Flame of Sydney is a stakes winner in her own right – winning the Desirable Handicap at Flemington – and is one of the featured lots at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on Friday.

“It was a great result for all concerned,” Field adds. “Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock and Matthew Sandblom have purchased interests in 46 colts over the last two years – current two and three year olds. Around 25 of those colts are in partnership with the China Horse Club.

“Of those 46, at least four are genuine stallions prospects – Russian Revolution (winner of the Group One The Galaxy on 18 March) and Invader are owned in partnership with the China Horse Club, while Capitalist (2016 Golden Slipper winner) and (multiple Group winner) Defcon are through James Harron Bloodstock.

“That’s a very good strike rate, better than one in 12, and it’s much cheaper sourcing tomorrow’s stallions at the yearling stage rather than trying to buy them after they’ve won a Group One!”

Field’s rationale is borne out by Aushorse statistics which show there is less risk, more reward when buying colts locally.

Australia’s top colts are more affordable than other markets and, if you end up buying a stallion prospect, the returns are better … certainly in comparison to Europe and the USA.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you have a better chance of buying the next generation of sire star in Australia with some 67% of Australian Group One winners sold before their racing careers, compared to 34% in Europe and 52% in the USA.

Invader is one of 59 stakes winners for Snitzel, who slam dunked Group One winners No. 9 & 10 in the space of around 12 hours with Heavenly Blue also winning the South African Classic at Turffontein.

Snitzel’s dominance of the sires’ charts is phenomenal, sitting on the top rung for general, 2YO and 3YO premierships and, in timely fashion, 44 of his youngsters will be offered this week at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
