Stakes Sweep For Local Breeders

Australian-bred runners made a stunning clean sweep of all 11 stakes races on the biggest day so far of the 2015 Sydney and Melbourne spring carnivals. From the Group 1 double of the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield through to the four Group 2s, three Group 3s and two Listed events, the locals saw off a strong international challenge. And in an almost total close-out, the locals filled 29 of the 33 stakes placings. In the Underwood the eight-year-old wonder horse Mourinho (Oratorio (IRE)) scored his first Group 1 win and earned himself a start in next month’s Group 1 WS Cox Plate. In a driving finish he beat last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner and another old marvel, The Cleaner. Mourinho coast a mere $36,000 at the 2009 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Little Wych Stud with Saturday’s win taking his racetrack earnings to $1.3 million. The Rupert Clarke went to Stratum Star (Stratum) who became his sire’s fourth Group 1 winner. A $165,000 purchase by one of Australia’s most astute buyers, Rick Hore-Lacy, from the Widden Stud draft at the 2103 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, Stratum Star will now be set for the Group 1 Toorak Handicap. Assisted by a gem of a ride from Craig Williams, Stratum Star beat Disposition and Under The Louvre. Both races featured three-way photo finishes in which every placegetter was Australian bred.
