Hong Kong

The Australian-bred Able Friend has set a standard for racehorses in Hong Kong that will be difficult to surpass.

In the 2014-15 season Able Friend raced his way to the top of the world rankings, establishing himself as the best miler on the planet. But he is far from the only Australian-bred superstar to have raced in Hong Kong.

Silent Witness and Sacred Kingdom rated among the world’s sprinters of their time and had cult followings in Hong Kong and were successful on a wider international stage. The Australian-bred Luger, a son of Choisir, won this year’s Hong Kong Derby and Thunder Fantasy won, anong other races, the HKG1 Classic Cup.

Australian-breds have been named Horseof the Year in Hong Kong in seven of the 16 seasons up to 2015.

Nearly half the horses in training In Hong Kong are Australian-bred and almost half the races in the Chinese territory are won by horses imported from Australia.
