As we prepare for the upcoming yearling sales, it’s a good time to reflect on what was a stellar year for the Australian thoroughbred industry in 2018.
Among the highlights were Winx’s historic fourth Cox Plate, Merchant Navy becoming the latest Australian-bred to win at Royal Ascot, the continued success of syndication through horses like Redzel and Amphitrite, plus the ongoing domination of the Classic Derby and Oaks races by locally bred runners.
With these successes in mind, Aushorse continues to sell the story of the domestic industry and why there is no better place to invest.
As we head into the sales season, kicking off with the Magic Millions in January, it is worth prospective buyers reflecting questions.
- Are you looking for a Classic winner? The last 12 Group One Derby and Oaks winners in Australia have been Australian-bred.
- Are you searching for a stallion? A huge 87 % of locally raised colts that have gone to stud in Australia or New Zealand for a fee of Aus$10,000 or more in the past five years were Australian-bred.
- Is prizemoney all important? Australian-bred or sold yearlings are eligible for more than $50 million in extra prizemoney each year in the form of sales races and breeding bonus schemes.
As we look forward to next year, there are a raft of new headline races on the calendar. Of course it’s not only at the top level where owners are getting better returns.
Since 2008 prizemoney across Australia has soared 92 per cent – this is easily the biggest increase of any racing nation in the world.
In 2019 there will be an amazing eight races worth $1 million or more for two year-olds. And if you want to target these prizes, you will need to buy Australian.
In the last 20 runnings of the Golden Slipper, Blue Diamond, Champagne Stakes, Sires Produce, JJ Atkins and Magic Millions Classic, all but six of the winners of these 120 races have been Australian-bred. That’s a success rate of 95 per cent!
