Weanling Sale Is Going To Be Great

The foal component of the Inglis Great Southern Sale commences at Oaklands Junction, Melbourne this Sunday, the largest weanling auction in the Southern Hemisphere in 2016.

The largest and, according to Inglis’ Victorian Bloodstock Manager, Simon Vivian, possibly the strongest.

With the 2-day weanling section comprising over 400 lots (plus an increasing number of supplementaries to be finalised tomorrow), Vivian believes quality will go a long way to matching quantity.

“I reckon this (the Great Southern) will be a super sale,” Vivian enthuses. “Consider this for a minute. There are 11 weanlings by Written Tycoon and seven by Street Boss. They are two of the hottest stallions in the country at the moment and you would find it very difficult to get a nomination to either of them this spring.

“Yet, here we have nearly 20 weanlings up for grabs by those two alone. And with over 100 stallions represented, there are also sons and daughters of Not a Single Doubt, Snitzel, Medaglia d’Oro, Magnus, Choisir, Hinchinbrook and More Than Ready, who had another Group One winner on Saturday with Eagle Way winning the Queensland Derby.

“Promising young stallions whose oldest are only two are well represented: Foxwedge already has winners in four countries and he’ll have nine weanlings in the Great Southern, while Poet’s Voice, who had a stakes winner on Saturday with My Country has one of the earliest lots in the sale. Moshe, So You Think as well.

“And there’s plenty of freshman sires too – 18 of them in fact – including Declaration of War, Shamus Award, Fiorente, Zoustar, The Factor, Sizzling, Dundeel, Unencumbered, Fighting Sun … a tremendous lineup.

“Pinhooking is definitely on the increase in Australia and you only have to cast your mind back to last year’s sale with Steve and Ceri Jostlear of Ampulla Lodge buying the Exceed And Excel colt (from Common Smytzer) for $300,000 and then on-selling him as a yearling for $800,000 some six months later.

“And seriously, who can forget ‘Roger’ the Teofilo colt that was snapped up by Three Bridges’ yearling manager, Karen Sinclair, for $32,000 before making $340,000 at this year’s Melbourne Premier.

“It really does serve to illustrate what’s on offer for the astute buyer at a sale like this. Teofilo hadn’t done that much in Australia by the time Karen’s weanling was purchased, but since then he’s been represented by Kermadec and an Australian Guineas winner in Palentino.”

Inglis’s Mark Dodemaide has been out on the inspection trail in recent weeks and shares Vivian’s view that it will be a cracking sale: “Sales in Australia have been really solid this year, and based on what I’ve seen among the entries for the Great Southern, there’s more than enough to attract investors from all over.

“There’s considerably more emphasis on weanling sales these days because there is so much upside. It’s interesting to note just how many of the lots are VOBIS qualified.”

Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria’s Executive Officer, Patrick Clancy, explains: “Previously, most breeders would enter their yearlings for Super VOBIS prior to the sales but now they have the capacity to enter their weanlings, which again is a great selling point. There is no doubt the VOBIS brand helps to deliver greater returns to both buyers and vendors.

“There is a lot of momentum in the local breeding industry and you’ll find that the addition of VOBIS to these weanlings will be a real positive.”

The 2016 Inglis Great Southern will be staged over four days: the first two devoted to ‘Platinum’ and ‘General’ sessions for the weanlings, while the final two days will consist of broodmares, stallion and stallion shares and racing stock.

HOOFNOTE: Mark Dodemaide has been involved in quite a few sales during his lifetime, but he claims he’s never seen anything like it. Lot 343 at the Great Southern is a bay or brown colt on offer from Noor Elaine Farm at Euroa. The name of the colt’s dam … Three For Free.

“What are the odds that Lot 343 is out a dam called Three For Free? A million to one!”
