With the past two Cape Thoroughbred Ready To Run sales in South Africa providing fruitful results for Australian-breds, taking a look through the upcoming Cape Thoroughbred Yearling Sale catalogue sees significant representation once again.
The 256 strong-yearling sale commences this coming Thursday and continues Friday before the running of the CTS Million Dollar, Africa’s richest horse race on the Saturday at Kenilworth.
In what could be a big few days for Australian-breds, Sensible Lover, Lonhromance and Champion 2YO Filly Entisaar (pictured below) will contest Saturday’s Group 1 Majorca Stakes with Group 1 performer Brazuca in the Group 1 Cape Derby.
While 11 yearlings catalogued in the Cape sale are Australian-bred, there are numerous yearlings by Australian-bred stallions as well as many that trace back through their female line to well-known Australian black type families.
Lot 21 on account of Highland Stud is a filly by Shamardal’s multiple 1 winner Lope de Vega, out of Manhattan Transfer, a Carnegie half-sister to General Nediym. Purchased at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale from the draft of Queensland’s Clearwater Farm, this filly traces back to Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Brew.
Bought as a weanling by South African trainer Paul Lafferty, Lot 41 is a bay filly by Vinery Stud’s Big Brown out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Nufoos, whose dam ironically raced in South Africa to Group 1 success before heading to stud in Australia.
With this filly being the third yearling from the mare to head to South Africa, her best runner to date is the Group 2-performing Hard Spun filly Estidraaj.
Another by Big Brown is Lot 110, a colt out of the Thirty Six Red mare They Say.
Purchased in Australia as a weanling for $46,000 by yearling consigner Klawervlei Stud, the well-bred colt is a half-brother to Champion 2YO Filly Hasna, a dual Group 1 winner for George Altomonte’s Corumbene Stud.
Lot 163 is an Australian-bred son of Wanted, with Lot 166 set to sell a few lots later being an Australian-bred son of Coolmore’s Uncle Mo. Both were purchased at the 2015 Magic Millions Weanling Sale are will sell as part of the large draft of Klawervlei Stud.
11 lots have been catalogued from the second crop by Gimmethegreenlight, a Group 1-winning Australian-bred son of More Than Ready. Purchased from the draft of Vinery Stud at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale by Hassen Adams, Gimmethegreenlight is a half-brother to Group 1 Coolmore Classic winner Ofcourseican, both out of the Canny Lad’s daughter Yes She Can Cancan.
Another by the stallion that is sure to create plenty of interest is Lot 126 from the draft of Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud.
The colt is out of the Australian-bred Galileo mare Walkingonthemoon, a half-sister to Sun Classique, who was foaled in Australia before doing the majority of her racing in South Africa where she was crowned Champion 3YO Filly after three Group 1 victories before heading to Dubai where she was successful at Group 1 level again, winning the Sheema Classic.
An Australian-bred stallion who is sure to create plenty of interest at the sale is Delago Deluxe.
The son of Encosta de Lago was sold as a yearling in Australia at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale before being sent to South Africa where he captured two Group 1’s, and then headed back to Australia to commence his stud career at Newhaven Park.
Delago Delux’s first yearlings, offered at the recent Magic Millions Yearling Sale, achieved 100% clearance in Book One with 10 yearlings averaging $169,000, off a service fee of just $11,000.
With two yearlings catalogued by him in this sale, the first to go through the ring is Lot 158, a colt out of the well-related Scenic mare Beam, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Bollinger, from the family of stakes winners Romneya, Always Alison, Benicio and Mannington.
The second of Delaxo Delux’s progeny to go through the ring is Lot 164 (pictured right), and both will be offered by Klawervlei Stud.
Out of the Dehere mare Bounding Along, a half-sister to the Group 2-winning, Group 1 placed Conservatorium, this filly was purchased from the weanling draft of Newhaven Park by respected judge Kerry Jack.
As the ever increasing presence of Australian-bred runners in South Africa creates increased local appeal in the breeding marketplace, the results of the 2014/15 season further highlight this with Australian-bred runners recording 18% of the Group victories and 23% of the Group 1 wins, from only 3% of the runners.
