Fastnet Fillies Justify The Faith

One of them cost $500,000 and the other $400,000. But their victories at Caulfield on Saturday made this pair of Fastnet Rock fillies look like value. The first-starter Missrock became the first to make her mark on Guineas Day, winning the Listed Inglis Debutant Stakes (1000m) with a stunning last-to-first victory. Missrock was the first of three stakes winners for Fastnet Rock over the weekend Trainer Robbie Laing said he hadn’t given much thought much about buying the filly until she entered the ring at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. “I hadn’t picked her out at the sales, I just saw her; I thought that’s a lovely colt and then I lifted her tail up and I thought ‘my God, it’s a filly’,” Laing said. “I said to Rob Palms, who was with me, ‘let’s go and watch this one bring a million dollars’. The bidding stopped at $450,000 so I very sheepishly put my hand up. “The auctioneer said ‘is that a bid’ and I replied ‘I think so’. “ Laing’s bid didn’t buy the filly, but after examining her x-rays and having a think, he offered vendor Cressfield Stud $475,000 which was also knocked back. “It took a while to get him right, but once he got used to us his whole attitude changed.” Fastnet Rock claimed another stakes victory when Serene Majesty (pictured) scored impressively in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m). The filly went for $400,000 at the 2014 Inglis Easter Sale and is raced by, among others, by the owners of the undefeated world champion Black Caviar. Missrock and Serene Majesty are Fastnet Rock’s 85th and 86th stakes-winners.
