The Inglis Classic Sale will break new ground when the first of three sessions at this weekend’s sale is held on a Saturday night at Newmarket, only minutes after the last race is run down the road at Randwick.
The second and third day sessions will be held on Sunday and Monday respectively.
“The introduction of the evening session is an innovation to the sale that will give our clients, especially those visiting Sydney, the opportunity to attend Royal Randwick during the day to see the running of the $250,000 Inglis Classic, and then make their way to Newmarket just minutes away in time for the first horse to walk through the ring at 6pm,” Inglis National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said.
Added Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson, whose famed thoroughbred nursery has entered 41 yearlings: “It’s certainly going to add to the atmosphere and plenty of good horses keep coming out of the sales. I think it will be a great way to kick off with the Saturday night session and I reckon it’s going to work really well.”
The sale has been a breeding ground for top class performers at bargain prices with group 1 winners Brazen Beau ($70,000) and Mourinho ($36,000) among some of the better performed graduates in recent years. Brazen Beau has kicked off his stallion career after his racetrack deeds ended with a trip to the United Kingdom last Australian winter.
Fivenandahalfstar, Sincero, Manawanui, Secret Admirer, Peggy Jean, Ilovethiscity and Pressday have also emerged from the sale in recent seasons.
A total of 575 lots have been added to this year’s catalogue with Widden Stud topping the list of vendors and I Am Invincible the leading stallion with 30 progeny up for sale while 15 Smart Missile youngsters will walk into the ring.
“We’ve sold plenty horses there and the sale never breaks the bank [of the buyers],” Thompson said. “There’s plenty of nice horses there and the BOBS double-up has certainly encouraged some people and added to the sale.
“There’s also great things happening in country racing in NSW meaning it’s an ideal sale for those people to come and buy at. It’s a really diverse catalogue and I think we’re going to see a pretty strong buying bench.”
