Stakes Treble For Weir

No trainer in Australia leads in more winners each year than Darren Weir. But Weir showed at Caulfield on Saturday that the quality competes well with quantity in his stable. Weir won the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) with La Passe (vision below), who has now scored two stakes wins in succession, the Group 3 David Jones Cup with Stratum Star (pictured above) and the Listed Gothic Stakes with Mahuta. No other trainer at the meeting collected more than one stakes success. Weir also registered a win on each of the three days of the Caulfield carnival, the most significant of them that of Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap. Tilla Bell Rings rounded out Weir’s haul in a minor race at Caulfield last Wednesday. Significantly, each of Weir’s five Caulfield winners were Australian-bred. Weir led the national trainers table by winners last season with 298, 13 of them at stakes level. He has trained six stakes winners this term, two of them at Group 1.
