South Africa
The success of Australian-bred runners in South Africa grows each year in proportion with the presence of that country’s owners and trainers at Australian yearling sales.
In the past season Australian-breds captured seven Group Ones and 14 percent of South Africa’s stakes races despite making up only three percent of the horse population.
Among the best of them is Majmu, the champion two-year-old filly of her season and a dual Group One winner at three. Alboran Sea also captured two wins at the highest level at three, her victories ensuring of the title of champion three-year-old fillye last season.
The most significant Australia-bred runner in South Africa in recent times is the mighty Igugu, crowned South African Horse of the Year; she was successful on ten occasions, seven of those at stakes level and four times at Group 1.
From a breeding industry perspective, the relationship between both Australia and South Africa has very close ties with not only Australia-bred racehorse being exported, but broodmares and stallions as well.
