The record sale price of $120,000 for a Spirit of Boom colt highlighted the 2018 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, and almost brought to an end the yearling sales season of 2018.

With only the Inglis Scone Yearling Sale and the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale to come into terms of major yearling sales, most farms will now be changing gear and looking towards the breeding season in the latter half of the year.

It’s probably an opportune time therefore to quickly look back on the action since the start of January.

Overall more than $448 million has been spent on 3756 yearlings in the sales season (up to the VOBIS Gold Sale). This is an increase of $56 million or 14% compared to last year reflecting the great confidence in Australian thoroughbred breeding and racing sectors.

The Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale got the ball rolling in January with a lift in average prices of more than 10 per cent.

A huge bounce was experienced at the Inglis Classic Sale, the first to be held at the new Riverside Stables complex. The sale aggregate in fact increased by $20 million.

Tasmania, Perth, Adelaide and particularly the Gold Coast March yearling sales all experienced hikes in gross and average from 2017, while Melbourne and Sydney Easter were down marginally off record highs in 2017.

Following the Scone sale on 13 and 14 May, the next major sale is the bumper Magic Millions National Sale (24 May – 7 June) with catalogues devoted to broodmares, weanlings, yearlings and racehorses. The Inglis Great Southern Sale is then held at Melbourne’s Oaklands Junction complex from 17 to 20 June.
